August 30, 2021) PTI government ready to build its first motorway in Punjab, funds approved, 69 km long Sialkot to Kharian Motorway will be constructed with the participation of private sector at a cost of Rs 27.80 billion. According to details, a recent board meeting of the Public Private Partnership Authority, chaired by Planning Minister Asad Umar, approved a public-private partnership agreement between the Highway Authority and Frontier Works Organization and Sultan Mahmood & Company.
A meeting of the Board of Public Private Partnership Authority, chaired by Planning Minister Asad Umar, considered the construction of Sialkot-Kharian Motorway on Public-Private Partnership.
According to the statement, the meeting approved a public-private partnership agreement between the National Highway Authority and Frontier Works Organization and Sultan Mahmood & Company.
Asad Umar said that a motorway project of Rs. 27.80 billion would be formulated with the participation of private sector in the country. He said that the cost of four lane 69 km long highway to be constructed on boat basis is Rs. 27 billion 80 crore. After financial closure, the project will be completed in two years. Toll collection period on the project has been fixed at 25 years. The project will be connected to Lahore-Sialkot Motorway and future Kharian Rawalpindi.
It may be mentioned here that the tender for Sialkot Kharian Motorway project was issued in May this year. The project's commercial, financial feasibility study, transaction procedures, and proposal package application were approved in March. In this regard, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that the motorway for North Punjab would be a great gift from Prime Minister Imran Khan. After the construction of this motorway, the distance from Jhelum to Islamabad will be reduced to only 45 minutes. Gujjar Khan, Sohawa and Dina will become the suburbs of Islamabad. The economic importance of Chakol, Jhelum, Kharian, Lala Musa and Wazirabad will also increase immensely.
